Grade 1 vs. Grade 5 English Willow — What’s the Real Difference?

“Grade 1” sounds like a technical spec, but it’s really a quality classification of the willow cleft itself — here’s what actually changes as you move from Grade 5 up to Grade 1.

What grading measures

Willow grading looks at how straight and evenly spaced the grain lines are, how few blemishes the cleft has, and how clean and consistent the face looks overall.

Does Grade 5 actually perform worse?

Not necessarily in a way you’d feel immediately. A Grade 5 bat is still genuine English willow — it will still outperform a Kashmir willow or composite bat at a similar price.
