How to Choose the Right Cricket Bat Size

Buying a cricket bat that’s the wrong size is one of the most common (and most avoidable) mistakes, especially for parents buying for a junior player who’s still growing. Here’s how sizing actually works.

Bat sizes are based on height, not age

Age is a rough guide at best — two ten-year-olds can need different sizes depending on height. As a general starting point: Size 4 suits players roughly 127–137cm tall, Size 5 suits 137–147cm, Size 6 suits 147–157cm, Harrow suits 157–163cm, and Full Size suits players 163cm and above. These are starting points, not hard rules — a slightly smaller bat that’s easier to control often beats a larger one that’s technically “correct” for height but too heavy to swing properly.

Why the wrong size actually hurts technique

A bat that’s too long forces a player to reach for the ball or adjust their stance awkwardly. A bat that’s too heavy for its size slows down the backlift and follow-through, which shows up as late shots and reduced timing — often mistaken for a technique problem when it’s really an equipment problem.

What to check before you buy

Stand the bat next to the player: the top of the handle should sit roughly at hip height when the bat rests on the ground. Then pick it up and play a few practice shots — if the backlift feels like hard work rather than natural, it’s too heavy or too long, regardless of what the size chart says.
