What Bat Grain Count Actually Means

If you’ve shopped for an English willow bat, you’ve seen grain count mentioned — usually as a selling point — without much explanation of what it actually tells you.

What grain is

The grains are the vertical lines visible on the face of the bat, each representing a year of the tree’s growth. Grain count is simply how many of these lines appear across the face.

What it does and doesn’t tell you

A higher grain count generally means a younger tree grew faster, which can mean tighter, straighter fibres — often (not always) associated with a firmer, more consistent surface. Straightness and evenness of the grain matter more than the raw number.

How grain relates to grade
